My work refers to the rhetorics of exhaustion of the 1980s, employing a historical referentialism to explore the genre of Fantasy. Fantasy, as a genre generator of bodies, has a political dimension. My interest in the structure and structuring of a fantastical body relates to its political implications. After the foucauldian and post-foucauldian studies on the relationship between knowledge and power, resistance is a matter of reflection for aesthetical disciplines as much as it is for sociology or political studies. The fantastical body is the structure upon which we should assemble the exhausted material, re-enacting and revaluating not the used-up forms but the very exhaustion, connecting with the sensibility stated by Jean Genet in one of his writings on Art: “useless ideas must be protected and provoke chanting”.
The execution of these fictional images excludes any preoccupation for narrative linearity and proceeds by fragments, which are worked independently, and eventually assembled. There is a sort of meta-fictional presentation of the process rather than the expression of an idea-in-mind. In this sense, the type of narrative structure implied by this process of making provides a context for this sense of being entangled in the materiality of representation.
