'Journal is a kind of test site — a laboratory of contemporary ideas. It seems to me that this is exactly what the ICA should be.'
- Ben Luke, Evening Standard

This summer, the ICA invites international artists, theorists and writers to present individual artworks, events, moving image and talks throughout the ICA and online. Each artist explores both historical events and more gradual social changes in their work: from responding to unusual circumstances created by major events, such as the wake of the 2011 Japan earthquake, or the residual post-invasion environment in Iraq, to simply finding unique connections through on- and offline chance encounters with public spaces and people. Rather than illustrating a circumscribed theme, Journal offers a looser configuration of individual projects to consider the artist’s role in bringing focus to the changing world around us.

At the project’s core is an exhibition of five individual presentations in media ranging from photography and installation to film, by Rossella Biscotti, Edson Chagas, Cyprien Gaillard, Paulo Nazareth, and Koki Tanaka. Of equal status are projects that have been made for the ICA’s online space including an online commission by Charlotte Prodger and Isla Leaver-Yap; live performance events that will take place at the ICA and off-site by Paul Elliman, Ahmet Öğüt, Richard Sides, and Koki Tanaka; and a series of artist film screenings in the ICA Cinema by Duncan Campbell and Bouchra Khalili. Accompanying these events will be talks by Marlie Mul and Joshua Simon including contributions to an ongoing online journal. Updated on a regular basis throughout the run of the project, this website presents unique online commissions alongside contextual information such as interviews and documentation of the related programme.
