A series of short presentations and discussions for aspiring artists and filmmakers who want to hear from professionals working with the moving image.
We are joined by artist-filmmaker Phillip Warnell, who is currently developing a new artists’ feature film with London-based production company Fly Film, artist Alice Theobald whose new collaborative commission is on show at the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead and film director Ninian Doff who is represented by Pulse Film and whose most recent music video credits include Miike Snow and Chemical Brothers.
In this session we will discuss each of their creative practice focusing on the development of their ideas and creative treatments encouraging the audience to play an active role in the discussion.
Phillip Warnell is an artist-filmmaker and academic. He produces cinematic works exploring a range of philosophical and poetic thematics. His most recent film, Ming of Harlem, won the Prix Georges de Beauregard at FID Marseille film festival in 2014 and the Universities Culturgest Prize at Indie Lisboa in 2015. His film work has been screened internationally in festivals and galleries including: Tate Modern (2015), Mexico City (Ficunam, 2015); Buenos Aires (BAFICI, 2015); Lisbon (IndieLisboa, 2015); Brazil (Curitiba, 2015).
Alice Theobald’s work draws upon a mixture of pop and underground cultural references as she develops multifaceted performances using music, installation, and video. Alice graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 2014, where she won the Gold Medal. In December 2015 Alice had her first solo exhibition in a public museum at the BALTIC – Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK. Alice recently completed the first cycle of the ‘Bear Pit’ Residency at Focal Point Gallery, commissioned by Grand Union.
Ninian Doff is an award-winning director whose work spans music videos, comedy shorts and commercials. His unique creative treatments for his work have led to awards and screenings at festivals around the world. Ninian’s Money video for pop group Peace was awarded “Best Choreography” at the UKMVA’s 2014 and also won the “Special Winners” award at Ciclope Festival 2014. Ninian’s award winning videography includes Chemical Brothers (Sometimes I Feel so Deserted), Miike Snow (Ghengis Khan), Graham Coxon (What’ll It Take), Mykki Blanco (The Initiation) and Darwin Deez (Free (The Editorial Me). Ninian’s commercial work includes easyJet’s Generation easyJet, Cadbury’s Marvelous Creations and 02's Be More Dog.
