In early-90s Mozambique, during the civil war, Muidinga struggles to survive without his parents, who have long since disappeared, whereabouts unknown. He finds a diary near a corpse which speaks of a woman in search of her young son and, convinced that the woman in question is his mother, sets off to find her, trekking from one refugee camp to another.
