Jean-Marie Straub’s Shorts Inspired by Cesar Pavese

Jean-Marie Straub’s Shorts based on Dialogues with Leucò

6 Apr 2019

The Mother (La Madre), Dir. Jean-Marie Straub, Italy, 2012, 20 min., Italian with English subtitles

This screening brings together four Jean-Marie Straub films based on Cesare Pavese’s retelling of Greek myths, Dialogues with Leucó (1947). In Artemide's Knee (Le Genou d’Artemide) (2008), the hunter Endymion becomes aware that his eternal love for the goddess of hunting, Artemide, is nothing but a never-ending struggle. In The Witches, Women among Themselves (Le Streghe, Femmes entre elles) (2009), Circé tells the goddess Leucò of the night she spent with Ulysses, while in The Inconsolable One (L' Inconsolable) (2011), one of the most beautiful of these films, Orpheus recounts his return from the world of the dead. The Mother (La Madre) (2012), the last film in this series, is based on one of Pavese’s most terrifying texts – a dialogue about fear, anger and hope.

Artemide’s Knee and The Witches, Women among Themselves will be screened in their original 35mm format.
