The Dardenne Brothers Retrospective: Rosetta

25 Apr 2015

Émilie Dequenne plays the title character in this contemporary drama that follows the day-to-day struggles of a tough Belgian teenager as she goes about her chores in a dreary, wintry town. Unemployed, Rosetta lives in a trailer park with her alcoholic mother.

In between caring for her mother, Rosetta is constantly on the move - searching for a job, scavenging for food and selling off clothes to earn a few extra francs. She seemingly has no friends or other relatives until Riquet shows up and assists her in getting a job in a bakery. This film was awarded two of the top prizes at the 1999 Cannes film Festival - Best Actress and the Palme d'Or.
