Culture Now: Pam Hogg in conversation with Gregor Muir

2 Nov 2012

Pam Hogg was one of the new wave of designers emerging in London during the early 1980s, launching her first fashion collection in 1981. Refusing to sell out to the mainstream fashion industry, Hogg sold her original and innovative designs from her own shop in Soho and they could be seen worn by some of the biggest names in the Eighties music and fashion scenes.

As well as performing as a musician in various bands (most notably Hoggdoll which she formed in 2003) in 1999 she made her first fashion film titled Accelerator starring Anita Pallenberg, Bobby Gillespie and Patti Palladin.

In 2006, the Spanish curator Xavier Arakistain invited Pam to exhibit in the traveling art exhibition Switch on the Power alongside Yoko Ono, Leigh Bowery, Andy Warhol and Kraftwerk. This prompted her to return to the medium of video, producing and directing two promos incorporating her clothes and music. She cast a host of friends including Siouxsie Sioux and Alison Mosshart from the Kills to appear alongside her in the new twin collections inspired by shiny metals and reflective surfaces. The resulting videos Opel Eyes and Electricman were viewed by a whole new unexpected audience via YouTube and MySpace as well as the exhibition itself. This direct access and exposure regenerated a new found interest in Pam Hogg's work and pushed her back into the spotlight resulting in media attention from magazines including Vogue and ID. The following year, she announced that she was to re-establish her focus on fashion.

In October 2008, the prestigious fashion store Browns of South Molton St London was the first to stock the new Hogg-Couture collection. Pam Hogg's designs have since been worn by an entire new generation of celebrities including Lady Gaga, Jessie J, Tyra Banks, Alice Dellal, Jaime Winstone, Rihanna, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Pam and ICA Executive Director Gregor Muir will discuss her career and the wide range of creative projects she has spearheaded.
