Jafar Panahi, who is currently being detained by Iran’s security forces, made Crimson Gold in 2003, when it won Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Crimson Gold, which begins with a hold up on a Tehran jewelery store and ends in tragedy, backtracks to detail the events that led an ordinary, decent man to crime. Scripted by Abbas Kiarostami and based on a true story, the film guides us round Tehran to build a moving portrait of a man feeling humiliated and helpless in a world of social injustice. The film was banned in Iran and has never been released there.
