On Collaborative Elaboration of Meaning: Photography & Film

This evening comprises of a panel discussion exploring the process of photographing artists’ actions and performances as a creative dialogue between photographer and performer. This is followed by a series of films that shed light on the issue of a creative dialogue between the artists and filmmakers. This event is curated and initiated by ICA Student Forum member Sylwia Serafinowicz, art critic and curator.

This panel discussion studies the process of photographing artists’ actions and performances as a creative dialogue between photographer and the subject in front of the camera. It also explores the afterlife of the images in relation to the sound.

Speakers include Alice Maude-Roxby, Programme Leader in Photography at the University College Falmouth and Curator of Live Art on Camera, John Hansard Gallery Southampton, 2007, and Space, London, 2008; Eileen Simpson and Ben White, artists and initiators of a collaborative project Open Music Archive; and Althea Greenan, Curator, Women’s Art Library, Goldsmiths.

These films are intended to shed light on the issue of a creative dialogue between the artists and filmmakers. Shot between 1943 and 1978, this selection presents how various artistic techniques (installation, painting, performance) were translated into film by camera operators and directors.

A film realised by two alumni of the Lodz Film School documenting the expressive process of painting associated with the technique of 'informel'. The film records interventions by Polish painter and theatre director Tadeusz Kantor.
