The Garage Sale

What not to miss at this year's pop-up shop

Organisers George and Sara choose their top seven picks from this year's shop at the ICA.

George Wu and Sara Melin

28 Nov 2016

This Christmas The Poundshop returns to the ICA with The Garage Sale on 1-3 December. Organisers George Wu and Sara Melin talked to us about some of their top picks from this year's shop.

We are delighted to be returning to the ICA with our new pop-up concept The Garage Sale this year, following the success of The Poundshop in 2014. The Garage Sale is a curated shop of seconds, prototypes, samples and past season products ranging from £1 - £100, with most of them under £10. This year we have over 90 designers who have contributed items covering jewellery, stationery, ceramics, homeware and accessories. Here are a few of the participating designers to watch out for on your visit.

ByShop

ByShop has been with us for many Poundshops. We love the minimalist design and their work with colour; the pieces are quietly graphic, which appeals to the graphic designer in George and the Scandi in Sara. A perfect fit! This year we have clocks, letter racks and their stylish candleholders.

Diamond candle holders: £10 each

Louise Madzia

Louise joined us for The Garage Sale last year with her illustrated ceramics which all sold out on the first day! Each one is adorned with elegant line drawings and look great either as a series or standalone pieces. One of them even has prime spot in George’s living room.

Encircle vase: £30

Tom Pigeon

Tom Pigeon’s range gets better and better every season and we are overjoyed to have them onboard again this year. Tom Pigeon is one of the designers that has been with us for years, and it is always great to see how they accommodate our Poundshop price bands. Now, with The Garage Sale, we get to stock a wider range including prints, notebooks and jewellery.

Assorted foiled prints : £10

Wolf and Moon

A handcrafted jewellery label by British designer Hannah Davis, Wolf and Moon is a new addition this year. With pastel colour palettes and elegant graphic compositions, this range is extremely affordable. We have earrings, necklaces and rings, and we are very excited about all of them!

Dot Dash Studs: £5

Thomas Danthony

If you’re a fan of brutalist architecture, this series of postcards is for you! Created by illustrator Thomas Danthony, he describes his work as “a narrative enhanced with a clever use of light that allows the images to tell a story and makes the spectator think”.  There is a matching book to accompany this series, along with tote bags, prints and LA postcards featuring his other work. We are very happy to welcome him back this year.

Brutalist Postcards: £1 each

Wrap

A few years ago, The Poundshop was featured by Wrap Magazine, which turned us onto their own product line. Collaborating with some of the many illustrators they champion in the magazine, their collection is bold, fun and incredibly popular. Grab a notebook to inject a bit of summer back into these wintry days!

Pineapple Notebook: £5

One We Made Earlier

We have been admiring One We Made Earlier’s necklaces for years, with their brilliant mix of materials and geometric shapes. The top price bracket at our sister event The Poundshop is £10, so we set up The Garage Sale to accommodate products that require a higher price range. Now we can work with our extended wish list of designers and stock these beautiful primary coloured gems.

Necklaces: £30

This is just a taste of some of the fantastic designers and products featuring in this year's Garage Sale. There is something for everyone and we will be restocking the shelves with new items everyday, so don’t worry if you can’t make it down on the opening night. We look forward to seeing you there – and remember to help the environment and bring a (large) bag! ■

The Garage Sale launches on Thursday 1 December at 6pm, and is open Friday 2 and Saturday 3 December, 11am – 6pm.
