This anti-romantic comedy, from the director of Juno and Up In the Air, is a biting character study of a woman in her 30s who writes young-adult fiction and clings to deluded teenage fantasies in her real life.
Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a thirty-something Minnesota fiction writer who returns to her small-town roots following her divorce to steal back an old flame (Wilson), who is married with kids. Emotionally immature and obsessed with recreating her teenage years come hell or high water, Mavis leaves a trail of destruction in her wake as she tries to break up the perfectly harmonious marriage of her high school sweetheart.
Charlize Theron puts on a shockingly good performance as a character we love to hate, reminding us not only of the acting talent which won her an Oscar for Monster in 2004, but also how rare it is to see such despicable, but also very human, female characters on screen.
