"Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, winner of the Cannes Grand Prix for The Wonders, is one of the best Italian directors of her generation. A filmmaker to watch in years to come." Nico Marzano, ICA Film & Cinema Manager
Set in Italy’s idyllic but impoverished countryside, writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s The Wonders focuses on a hard-pressed farming family presided over by a stern patriarch, who’s bent on protecting his wife, aunt and four young daughters from the wicked world outside.
The eldest daughter, Gelsomina, is charged with daily responsibility for her siblings and much of the hard labour involved in farm work. In particular she must tend to the bee colony that appears to be her father’s financial and metaphorical lifeblood. Initially it’s unclear whether Gelsomina is unhappy with her lot, but a chance encounter with a crew filming a tacky TV show—presented by a diva-ish Monica Bellucci—awakens something in her that will change her and her entire family’s lives.
The Wonders, dir. Alice Rohrwacher, Italy/Switzerland/Germany 2014, 111 mins, Italian with English subtitles.
