A Weight, a Course, a Coursing: Talk by Mitchell Akiyama

14 Sep 2018

Developing themes that are part of his site-specific installation for In formation III, Mitchell Akiyama discusses the connections between individual and architectural embodiment, identity and affectivity. The talk is a speculation on the interweaving and interleaving that inevitably occurs between institutions, architecture and individuals.

Positing that spaces have feelings too, Akiyama plots an oblique history of institutional space via the circulation of material goods and immaterial forces. This presentation will greatly please anyone interested in further confusing haunted houses with sick buildings with the modernist ideal of the built environment as constituting machines for living.

Mitchell Akiyama is a Toronto-based scholar, composer and artist. His eclectic body of work includes writings about sound, metaphors, animals, and media technologies; scores for film and dance; and objects and installations that trouble received ideas about history, perception and sensory experience. He holds a PhD in communications from McGill University and an MFA from Concordia University and is Assistant Professor of Visual Studies in the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.
