Xavier Dolan (Heartbeats) follows up last year’s romantic Laurence Anyways with an altogether darker fourth feature. Here he directs himself as Tom, a young gay man who attends the funeral of his lover and is shocked to discover that the man’s family has no idea who he is or how he is connected to the deceased.

Shades of Patricia Highsmith, as well as Hitchcockian flourishes – from a decidedly Bernard Herrmann-esque score to some audaciously vertiginous camerawork – shift Dolan into full auteur mode in this unforgettably moody thriller, demonstrating new depths and versatility from the French-Canadian director. The result is an unmissable new film from one of the most exciting voices in cinema today.
