STOP PLAY RECORD Film Workshop: Kathryn Ferguson

18 Nov 2015

A Q&A with film director and curator Kathryn Ferguson open to young filmmakers. This event is designed for 16-24-year-olds and will take place from 4-5pm after the screening of We are the Best!

In response to the We are the Best! screening, this workshop uses the film by Lukas Moodysson as a starting point to talk about filmmaking practice. Kathryn Ferguson will discuss her own work in relation to the film, music and fashion industries and engage in a dialogue with filmmakers in the audience.

Kathryn Ferguson is a film director, film curator & fashion film research fellow, currently living and working in London.

She has made many films for fashion designers, international brands and musicians including Chloé, Selfridges, Dev Hynes & Neneh Cherry, Nike, Sinead O’Connor, Sony, Lady Gaga and SHOWstudio. Her films have been screened globally at film festivals around the world and on platforms such as MTV, Dazed Digital, Nowness, Twin, the BBC, in Vogue and appeared on BOF’s Top 10 Fashion Films of the Season. Film festivals, screenings and group shows include OneDotZero, the Berlinale, the V&A, the Pompidou Centre, ASVOFF, Aesthetica Film Festival and Birds Eye View Film Festival at the BFI.

As well as working as a freelance director, in 2014 she was appointed Resident Film Director for Selfridges, directing and overseeing all moving image content for 2015/16. As a director a huge part of Kathryn’s work is focused around the creation of more positive representations of femininity within advertising, fashion and music content. She is developing her first feature length documentary about the Northern Irish Abortion Laws and rising female activism within the country.

In conjunction with her filmmaking practice, Kathryn also works as a curator. She began curating the annual Birds Eye View Film Festival’s ‘Fashion Loves Film’ strand at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and British Film Institute in 2008 where it continued until 2013. Since then she has been working with the British Council and The British Fashion Council as a curator specialising in the emerging genre of fashion film.

She also works as a Fashion Film Research Fellow at London College of Fashion & a Visiting Practitioner at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
