A highly respectful remake of the 1948 Chinese classic, Tian Zhuangzhuang's film is set in a small town in southern China in 1946.
A respectable Chinese family is disrupted by the arrival of a young man who stirs up strong feelings of passion and jealousy, an emotional earthquake that's even more powerful for being suppressed by the film's deceptively polite style.
