Spring Breakers

Cinematic provocateur Harmony Korine’s latest offering, Spring Breakers, features former Disney Channel protégée Selena Gomez, High School Musical –starlet Vanessa Hudgens, along with Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine as four college girls who pull an armed robbery in order to fund their spring break vacation to Florida. After promptly getting arrested for indulging in narcotic substances at a local party, the girls find themselves bailed out by silver-toothed gansta-rapper/arms dealer ‘Alien’ – played with relish by James Franco - who shelters them in his beachside mansion, serenades them with Britney Spears ballads and entangles them in a violent gang war.

With a soundtrack that includes Skrillex, SebastiAn and Cliff Martinez, and visual influences that range from Terrence Malick to Teenage Girls Gone Wild, Korine’s new film is both shamelessly exploitative and a searing satire of middle-class America’s seemingly amoral youth.
