Sean Penn gives a remarkable performance as Harvey Milk, the openly gay San Francisco City Supervisor who campaigned for gay rights during the 1970s until his assassination in 1978. This is a mainstream and largely conventional Hollywood biopic from one of our greatest indie directors, put across with real purpose and conviction.
