Based on the 1954 short story ‘Did You Have to Turn on the Lights, Lili?’ by Egyptian writer Youssef Edris, director Marawan Hamed’s Lili, explores faith by following a handsome young preacher who must fend off the belle of his district. Ayten Amin presents an atypical feminist take on female rivalry in Her Man, an adaptation of a short story by Egyptian writer Ahdaf Soueif. Jordanian director Yahya Alabdallah offers a brief snapshot of marital dysfunction in A Man in a Cup, an adaptation of a short story by Iraqi writer Hedeya Hussein. Qatari director Ali Al Anssari takes on American writer Edgar Allan Poe’s iconic 1843 short story ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ in I, a tale of friendship, betrayal and conceit.
