A staged improvisation, The Connection posits itself as unedited footage of a documentary on drug addicts when it's really a fictional recreation of a stage play of the same name, penned by Jack Gelber. Revealing a play within a film within a film, the obfuscating layers of the narrative allow Clarke to explore her fascination with performance and authenticity with aplomb.
