Winner of Un Certain Regard award at Cannes Film Festival 2015
Brothers Gummi (Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Júlíusson) are sheep farmers living on neighbouring farms in remote rural Iceland. They haven’t spoken to each other for 40 years. Following an outbreak of a potentially lethal disease among the country’s sheep, the government insist that all existing flocks must be slaughtered. The brothers—who care about their animals more than they do the few humans they come into contact with—deal with this in decidedly different, but equally dramatic ways, and must reunite to save their way of life. Writer-director Grímur Hákonarson balances charming wry comedy with poignant realist drama. The two central performances by the raggedy, heavily bearded actors are full of subtle warmth, conveying a deeply felt connection to the land and all who live off it – sheep included.
