Plus Minus Ensemble & Kammer Klang / James Beckett

18 Nov 2009

This event brings together some of the most exciting experimental musicians and composers for an evening that tests the limits of notated music and performance. Featuring seminal works from giants of contemporary music Iannis Xenakis and Giacinto Scelis, the evening also features significant presentations of work by renowned Norwegian composer Trond Reinholdtsen, and artist James Beckett. The evening will move between the ICA theatre and gallery, creating a compelling tour of performative vignettes.

Plus Minus Ensemble is an international group of musicians committed to the presentation of the avant-garde and experimental traditions within classical music. Tonight they join forces with other musicians under the umbrella of Kämmer Klang, a series of boundary crossing events devised by musician Lucy Railton. The evening's players include Vicky Wright, Shabaka Hutchings, Mark Knoop, Roderick Chadwick, Adam de la Cour, Aisha Orazbayeva, Lucy Railton, Alex Waterman, Matthew Coorey and Joanna Bailie. Together these participants are presenting a series of recent pieces by Norwegian composer Trond Reinholdtsen, alongside works by Larry Polansky, Giacinto Scelsi, Matthew Shlomowitz, Iannis Xenakis, and Alex Hills.

The evening includes an additional attraction in the form of James Beckett, a Zimbabwean artist based in Amsterdam, whose work is characterised by presentation of information within pseudoscientific or museological formats - often with absurd and humorous results. Beckett is interested in the articulation of sound, and he has collaborated with members of pan-European ensemble N-Collective on the production of several experimental works. Tonight Beckett is presenting three pieces, with the help of Koen Nutters and Morten J Olsen of N-Collective, and supported by musicians from Plus Minus Ensemble.
