Out of Bounds: Susan Philipsz

27 Sep 200828 Sep 2008

For one weekend only the ICA is staging an outdoor sound installation by Scottish artist Susan Philipsz. The installations of Philipsz often use recordings of her own unaccompanied voice, and her piece at the ICA employs a recording of the artist singing The Internationale, the song that became the anthem of international socialism. Philipsz’s installation is staged on the ICA’s private terrace overlooking The Mall, and evokes the history of utopian thought that echoes around the ICA and the history of social protest that echoes around Westminster.

This installation is part of Out of Bounds, a season of art events taking place at the ICA, Tate Modern and a number of other contemporary art spaces. All of the activities employ hidden, backstage and non-public sites at the participating institutions, spaces that are already ‘owned’ by the public but which the public cannot usually see. The paved area in which Philipsz’s work is located is a key component of Carlton House Terrace, the Grade I listed urban scheme by Regency architect John Nash where the ICA is housed.

To experience Susan Philipsz’ sound piece please gather in the ICA foyer, from where guided groups will depart every hour and half hour between noon and 7pm. All of the events in Out of Bounds are taking place on the last weekend of September, and the season is part of the launch weekend for London's Cultural Olympiad.

Out of Bounds is part of the GLA's Open Rehearsal festival.
