A French special agent saunters off to Cairo with orders to 'make the Middle East safe' and sets about offending women, Muslims and anyone else who isn't an unreconstructed French 1950s male.

Owing more to the Zucker and Marx Brothers than to Austin Powers or even James Bond, this suave French character, actually first created in 1949, takes us through a couple of hours of perfectly judged satire and belly laughs. From Michel Hazanavicius, the director of The Artist, this surprise hit established his international reputation.

Dir Michel Hazanavicius, France 2006, 99 minutes, subtitles, Cert 12A
