Opening Night

16 May 2012 – 17 May 2012

Opening Night is an unsung cinematic masterpiece of the 1970s from one of the true pioneers of American Independent cinema, John Cassavetes. Directed, shot and acted with exhilarating energy and sensitivity to detail, the film marries Cassavetes’ usual concerns with emotional catharsis to a back-stage drama and a focus on the creative process. Gena Rowlands (his wife and muse) stars as a Broadway actress precipitated into real-life crisis when an adoring fan dies on the first night of a new play. An acutely insightful study into how performance relates to inner reality.
