Open City Documentary Festival: Looking for the Perfect Beat

20 Jun 2015

A screening of two films.

Looking for the Perfect Beat
(dir. Matthew F. Smith, USA 2013, 51 mins)

Looking for the Perfect Beat is a vérité immersion inside the unique Los Angeles "beat scene" music community, centered around the world-famous Low End Theory club night. Filmed over the summer of 2013, the film takes us into the studios and inside the personal creative processes of the internationally-acclaimed pillars of the scene.

LA music luminaries such as Thundercat, the Gaslamp Killer, TOKiMONSTA, Jonwayne, Daedelus, Ras G, Teebs, Free the Robots, and Matthewdavid are all featured. Looking for the Perfect Beat provides a holistic view of LA's key players in this generation's electronic music landscape while instilling hope for the future of cross-cultural creative unions.

Real Scenes: New York
(dir. Resident Advisor, USA 2013,  22 mins)

New Yorkers are fighting to revive the dance music scene. Promoters, producers and DJs are establishing Brooklyn as a new creative center. A new generation of producers are infusing the city's musical legacy with the sounds of the international scene. But the luxury condos rising along the waterfront are a constant reminder that the city's relentless evolution could easily stamp the electronic scene out again.
