One Sings, the Other Doesn’t + intro

30 Aug 2018

One Sings, the Other Doesn’t (L'une chante, l'autre pas), Dir. Agnès Varda, France, 1977, 116 mins, French with English subtitles

A radical blend of genres, Agnès Varda’s ‘feminist musical’ centres on the lives of two women involved with the women’s movement. Suzanne is a 22-year-old mother of two young children who becomes friends with Pauline, a rebellious 17-year-old student. Suzanne is pregnant and wants an abortion, which is illegal in France of 1962. When Pauline provides money and advice, the two women kindle a friendship that spans more than a decade of changes surrounding gender and women’s rights. This is a personal film for Varda, who was involved in the women’s movement, and her own two children form part of the large cast.

This screening will be introduced by Aga Baranowska, Film Programme Coordinator.
