The Sprawl

Masāfāt: Deena Abdelwahed, Karen Gwyer, Mumdance, Logos, Shapednoise Present The Sprawl

2 Sep 2016

Masāfāt’s second night of live performances features Mumdance, Logos, and Shapednoise presenting The Sprawl, joined by Karen Gwyer and Deena Abdelwahed.

Frequent collaborators Mumdance and Logos explore and deconstruct grime, hardcore and bass music, finding new sonic possibilities in taking it all apart. Collaborating here with Shapednoise, the Italian noise artist whose eerie and industrial efforts have been released on labels like Opal Tapes and Hospital Productions, they create an uncanny cybertopian world, fittingly borrowing its nameThe Sprawlfrom scifi author William Gibson’s work.

With a similarly forward-looking outlook, Tunisian DJ and electronic performer Deena Abdelwahed forges an alternativeand futuristictake on Arab club music.

They are joined by American producer Karen Gwyer, whose woozily melodic music blends psychedelia, dreampop and hard techno.

  • Mumdance

Jack Adams aka Mumdance has been busy restructuring the DNA of grime and UK Bass stylings for years. Following early success with heavy-hitting low-end mutants, he revamped his style and started from scratch, using predominantly analogue gear for his own productions. In 2014, Mumdance and Logos founded Different Circles, a label dedicated to the future sounds of grime and the genre’s interfaces with bordering aesthetics borrowed from ambient to techno.

  • Logos

Logos is best known as a producer and DJ in his own right, and possibly the first to explore the disembodied, ‘weightless’ style of grime on his debut LP Cold Missionon Keysound Recordings. Alongside Slackk, Oil Gang and Mr. Mitch he is also one of the heads behind the seminal instrumental grime night Boxed. Berlin via Palermo’s experimental techno auteur.

  • Shapednoise

Shapednoise has made a name for himself by pairing eerie ambience in the tradition of the Italian horror score with industrial leanings on labels like Opal Tapes, Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions and his own Repitch Records.

  • Karen Gwyer

Karen Gwyer is a US-born (Iowa), London-based electronic artist. Recording while living in London and pregnant with her son, Karen Gwyer assembled a deeply intricate collage for her mesmeric full-length debut Needs Continuum. At times recalling the warped disco of Arthur Russell, her music combines spiritual chanting, tumbling percussion and scifi synth-hum to shape a new form of cosmic techno.

  • Deena Abdelwahed

Deena Abdelwahed is a Tunisian DJ, electronic music performer and a member of the Arabstazy collective. Coming from the Tunisian alternative music scene, she injects a dose of innovation and experimentation to the electronic dance music scene. Her combination of urban rhythms and a unique personal touch offers an avant garde perspective that’s full of energy. She debuted as a funk and jazz singer two years before joining the World Full of Bass collective in 2011, which was founded by Shinigami San, an experimental pioneer in Tunisia’s electronic scene. Since moving to Toulouse, France, she has broadened the horizons of her music and performances, and is ever-looking to expand them.
