Boston janitor Lee lives a life of solitude in his near-empty apartment. His daily drudgeryworking, drinking, getting into fightsis disrupted by the news that his brother Joe has died. Reluctantly, Lee heads to his home town, Manchester By The Sea, Massachusetts, where he is shocked to discover that Joe has made him guardian of his teenage son Patrick. There is more to be confronted, however: what happened between Lee and his ex-wife Randi, who still lives there, that has left such a gaping void in his life?
