Aesthetics of the Irrational: Discussion with Jean-Claude Carrière & Diego Buñuel

After dumping a bucket of water on a beautiful young woman from the window of a train car, wealthy Frenchman Mathieu (Fernando Rey), regales his fellow passengers with the story of the dysfunctional relationship between himself and the young woman in question, a fiery 19-year-old flamenco dancer named Conchita (played alternately by Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina). What follows is a tale of cruelty, depravity and lies - the very building blocks of love.

Born in 1931 in a village in southern France, Jean-Claude Carrière has led one of the most varied and successful literary careers. After early work with Jacques Tati, Jean-Claude Carrière met Luis Buñuel in 1963, with whom he worked with as writer for twenty years (Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, That Obscure Object of Desire). Following this, Carrière has since worked with other notable directors including Milos Forman, Louis Malle, Philip Kaufmann, Jonathan Glazer, and Michael Haneke.

Diego Buñuel is a French filmmaker, who has directed and hosted a variety of films and series including National Geographic Channel's Don't Tell My Mother. In 2014 he was appointed Director of Documentaries and Factual Entertainment at Canal Plus. He is the grandson of Luis Buñuel.
