Luis Buñuel: Aesthetics of the Irrational: The Young One

Gamekeeper Miller (Zachary Scott) and Evalyn (Key Meersman), a young and naïve orphan girl, live on a southern island of the United States of America where black jazz musician Travers (Bernie Hamilton) arrives hoping to evade those who have falsely accused him of raping a white woman.

Based on the story Travellin' Man by Peter Matthiessen, The Young One deals with issues of racism and rape within a complex frame where human beings are shown as being simultaneously capable of both good and evil. The film won the special Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival in 1960 for its ability to cast aside Manichaeism, instead taking an unusual approach to overcoming prejudices, taboos and stereotypes.
