Luis Buñuel: Aesthetics of the Irrational: Un Chien Andalou + L’Age D’Or + Discussion featuring Maria Delgado, Jo Evans, Peter Evans, and Rob Stone

12 Nov 2015

A panel discussion featuring Maria Delgado, Jo Evans, Peter Evans, and Rob Stone follows the screening.

The evening features a special screening of rare short film Eating Sea Urchins.

Un Chien Andalou

Developed with Salvador Dalí through methods of free association, Buñuel’s first film emerged from the centre of the Surrealist movement of 1920s Paris. Breaking conventions of narrative comprehension with the irrational logic of dreams, the film is designed to shock with its startling juxtaposition of imagery. Un Chien Andalou is the Buñuel prototype now held as the most famous short film of all time.

Shown in 35mm.

L'Age D'Or

A further collaboration with Dali, though their friendship fell apart during production, Buñuel used funding from a wealthy noble to produce one of the first sound films made in France. Though immediately popular, the film’s clear critique of modern life caused offense among the right-wing groups it intended to insult. After violent attacks, the film was banned and withdrawn from public exhibition for more than forty years. Having today been embraced as a great classic L’Age D’Or remains a potent confrontation of the hypocritical repression of social values.
