LSFF: Youth Through The Decades Part #2

The second part of a double-bill of documentaries spanning the decades, examining the dreams and aspirations of each generation of ‘youth’ past. Where possible, these classic films are being screened from original formats including 35mm, presenting a rare chance to see these hard-to-catch films on the big screen. The final film in the programme is the LSFF With Teeth commission by Grace Ladoja, a celebration of subculture in London 2016.

Part Two: Eighties, Nineties, Noughties & Beyond

As youth culture comes of age in the late 20th century, its myriad strands and tribes gave many alternative choices for young people while still annoying the older generations.

Heavy Metal Parking Lot, US 1986, Jeff Krulik and John Heyn, 17 mins

It’s all in the title: Heavy Metal Parking Lot became an underground cult classic that captured Judas Priest fans pre-concert, May 1986. Usually traded on bootleg VHS videotapes, it was reportedly a favourite on the Nirvana tour bus.
Dirty Girls, Michael Lucid, US 1996, 18 mins

Dirty Girls is a short doc about a real life clique of aspiring riot grrls, rejecting patriarchal conventions and personal hygiene, shot by a Los Angeles high-school senior.
Grinding, Simon Wheatley, UK 2009, 16 mins

The mid Noughties saw grime spilling over its E3 beginnings and penetrating the mainstream, with London natives like Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, Lethal Bizzle and Kano breaking through into the charts. These interviews focus on the young people who were still striving for stardom while living their daily lives on the streets of East London.
