Kes, Dir Ken Loach, 1969

2 Apr 20117 Apr 2011

Screening in conjunction with the Great Directors documentary, Ken Loach’s feature debut mixes realism with a strain of natural poetry to tell the story of a boy who finds a vicarious means of escape from his otherwise limited existence in northern industrial town of Barnsley. David Bradley plays the youngster who finds and trains a kestrel, although the independence he so admires in the bird is not something that marks his own coming-of-age.
