French director Bertrand Tavernier takes us on an expedition of French cinema guided by his own experience as a filmmaker and his passion for the field. Tavernier illustrates the impact that French cinema has had on him by portraying his enthusiasm for films, actors, directors, composers, writers and cinematographers, whose work has played a meaningful role in the history of French film. From Jean Renoir and Claude Chabrol through to Jean-Pierre Melville and Jean Becker, he explores unglorified auteurs through elucidating clips accompanied by his commentary and behind the scenes footage.
