These screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
After seven years away, deadbeat rocker Eikichi (Ryuhei Matsuda) reluctantly returns to his home on a remote island near Shikoku with news that his girlfriend Yuka (Atsuko Maeda) is pregnant and that they will be getting married. After a wild welcome party, Eikichi’s old-school father collapses and a subsequent doctor’s visit reveals the worst: Osamu is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
With a nod to Keisuke Kinoshita’s Carmen Comes Home, this heart-warming and hilarious story follows helpless Eikichi’s attempts to make his bedridden father happy. Directed by Shuichi Okita (Chef of the South Polar, The Woodsman and the Rain, The Story of Yonosuke), The Mohican Comes Home follows the touching story of a disjointed family with different desires, who nonetheless come together at a critical time.
The Mohican Comes Home (モヒカン故郷に帰る [Mohikan kokyo ni kaeru]), dir. Shuichi Okita, Japan 2016, 124 mins, Japanese with English subtitles.
