ICA : CHRISTEENE

2 Nov 2018

The Institute of Contemporary Arts is pleased to present performance artist CHRISTEENE for a one-night celebration of the artist’s boundary-pushing terrorist drag practice.

For ICA : CHRISTEENE, the artist presents a screening of videos released through their long-term collaboration with filmmaker and cinematographer PJ Raval, accompanied by discussion of these and CHRISTEENE’s broader practice encompassing choreography and song-writing, with writer Paul Clinton.

From 7pm, Clinton and CHRISTEENE narrate a curated screening programme of the artist’s videos, before CHRISTEENE takes to the stage at 9pm, for a live show specially conceived for the ICA. Stank house beats are supplied by DJ Princess Julia.

This marks the close of a live European tour of CHRISTEENE’s second album Basura.

*Performance contains adult content. No under 18s after 9pm.
CHRISTEENE is a human pissoir of raw unabashed sexuality; a gender-blending, booty-pounding perversion of punk, fully equipped with an arsenal of ferocious music intertwined with raw moments of strained intimacy and fiery stank. Reports from live shows describe distressed choreography, macabre scenes involving butt plugs tied to bouquets of balloons being released from the singer’s arse, intimate and bizarre confessionals, wardrobes styled from the forgotten scraps of society and heated communication on the state of the world. CHRISTEENE tours extensively both nationally and internationally as well as having supported such bands as Faith No More and Peaches on their world tours.

Paul Clinton is a writer and curator based in London. He was Senior Editor at Frieze magazine for four years before taking up the post of lecturer in curating at Goldsmiths, University of London. His writing regularly appears in Art Monthly, Art Review, Frieze, MOUSSE, London Review of Books and other publications. Previous curated shows include duh? Art & Stupidity, at Focal Point Gallery, and Art Cinema at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen. In 2018, he curated Forbidden to Forbid at Balice Hertling, Paris; co-organised the queer artists’ book fair Strange Perfume at South London Gallery; and delivered a series of public lectures entitled Performance Power Desire at Camden Arts Centre, London. His book Other Hunting will be published in January 2019 by Ma Bibliothèque.
