ICA Billboard Commission: Scott King

1 Aug 201026 Nov 2010

The ICA bar and cafe is the site for an ongoing series of ‘billboard’ commissions. Artists are invited to contribute works for the bar wall, considering the public and social nature of the cafe environment. Previous works by Freee and Karl Holmqvist have occupied the space, with the latest commission being produced by artist Scott King.

Scott King trained as a graphic designer, and has worked as an art director for I-D magazine, and as creative director of Sleazenation. His artwork is infused with an interest in how an iconic image can become detached from its original meaning, and reduced to a unit of symbolic information. Specifically, King’s large scale digital prints and sculptures refer to political ideologies that have been undermined through this fluidity and systemisation of iconography.

Scott King (born Goole, 1969) has exhibited internationally, including CRASH! at the ICA in 1999 (with Matt Worley) and recent solo shows at the Kunstverein Munich, Herald Street, London and Bortolami, New York (all 2008). Recent group exhibitions include Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art, Barbican Art Gallery, London (2009) and Newspeak, Saatchi Gallery, London (2010).
