I’m Not A Racist, But…

28 Jan 2010

BNP leader Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time, scandals over the use of racist language by Carol Thatcher and Anton du Beke, endless debates in parliament and the media about immigration and Islam - it is clear that Britain remains a confused country when it comes to talking about race.

Can we have a meaningful dialogue about national identity without descending into ignorance or invective? If Britishness, Englishness, whiteness and blackness mean so many different things to so many different people, how can we find a common language that articulates who we are as a nation?

Speakers include playwright and critic Bonnie Greer, Observer columnist Miranda Sawyer and author Paul Kingsnorth. ICA Executive Director Ekow Eshun chairs.
