With echoes of The Big Lebowski, this beautifully crafted film is the final instalment (after O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Intolerable Cruelty) in the Coen brothers’ ‘numbskull trilogy’. Set in the glamorous world of 1950s Hollywood, Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of studio ‘fixer’ Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin). Eddie is tasked with retrieving movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), who has been kidnapped from the set of a sword ’n’ sandals epic by a shadowy group of Communist screenwriters calling themselves The Future. Eddie’s other challenges include an uptight British film director (Ralph Fiennes) and an indiscreet starlet (Scarlett Johansson). Fast-moving interwoven plot lines, the Coens’ trademark dry humour and a star-studded ensemble castwhich includes Frances McDormand, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Dolph Lundgrenmake this a joy to behold.
