This is the UK premiere of Gulîstan, Land Of Roses and will be preceded by an introduction.
Gulîstan left Montreal as a young woman to join the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in its fight against Daesh. Following her story, director Zaynê Akyol brings us a powerful vision of women risking their lives for what they believe in. We see them train in guerrilla tactics and form new friendships; throughout, the threat of violence continues to grow.
Patient and self-aware, Akyol elicits mesmerising interviews which shed light on the women’s motivations and fears. At the heart is the question: what is the cost of our freedom?
