Helmrich's first film following the lives of Rumidjah, her family and friends, shows how the family is buffeted by the sweeping political turmoil in Indonesia at the turn of the 21st century. As protest and civil unrest rock the country The Eye of the Day follows the daily lives of sixty-two year old Rumidjah and her family in working-class Jakarta. A profound and deeply moving exploration of a family struggling to survive in a time of profound change while encapsulating the highs and lows of ordinary life.Helrich's unique visionary camera technique begins to find its form and bring us deep into the personal lives of his likeable and complex portrait of a single family.
