Penny Lane, Our Nixon, 2013

DocHouse: Our Nixon + Q&A

19 Sep 2013

Throughout Richard Nixon’s presidency, three of his top White House aides obsessively documented their experiences with Super 8 cameras. Young, idealistic and dedicated, H.R. ‘Bob’ Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and Dwight Chapin had no idea that a few years later they’d all be in prison.

Their home movies of the president, over 500 reels, were seized by the FBI during the Watergate investigation, then filed away and forgotten for almost 40 years.

Piecing together this Super 8 treasure trove with other archival TV interviews and audio recordings from the original Watergate tapes, director Penny Lane has created an extraordinary, intimate and revealing record of the Nixon era.

This screening will be followed by a panel Q&A with Paul Mitchell (director of the 1994 BBC series Watergate) and UCL Professor of US Studies and American History Iwan Morgan (author of Nixon and Watergate Remembered: The Legacy for American Politics).

Our Nixon, dir. Penny Lane, USA 2013, 85 mins.
