Daddy and the Muscle Academy

Newly restored Daddy and The Muscle Academy—the only film ever made with Tom of Finland—captures Tom’s story in his own words, from his childhood in rural Finland to the influence of WWII on his drawings and his experiences in the United States. Depicted through hundreds of vividly rendered portraits of male models, he describes his drawing method and explains the personal and professional motives behind his work.

Daddy and The Muscle Academy explores the subject matter of his sketches and paintings and the development of his photorealistic style illustrated in images from various magazines, books and posters spanning five decades. The film also features interviews with the artist's models, associates and intimates, not to mention a dramatised journey into Tom's soul. The evolution of Tom of Finland’s work, from the private fantasies of a man in Europe to the underground images that shaped a generation’s ideas of how a gay man could look and act, are captured in this 2017 restoration.
