Culture Now: Rebel Architecture

12 Jun 2015

Presented in response to Al Jazeera’s documentary series Rebel Architecture, this talk brings together filmmakers and architects to explore how the architect’s role is being redefined by current critical economic and social conditions, addressing questions regarding the links between architecture and politics.

Subversive Spanish architect Santiago Cirugeda (featured in ‘Guerrilla Architect’, the first episode of the Rebel Architecture series) presents, followed by a discussion with filmmaker and assistant series producer Ana Naomi de Sousa, and chaired by architect and curator Gonzalo Herrero Delicado and film researcher and curator Erica Faleiro Rodrigues.

Rebel Architecture uncovers the architects who are shunning the glamour of ‘starchitecture’ in turn using design to tackle the world’s urban, environmental and social crises.

"In contemporary architecture, people are always concerned with ‘what a beautiful building’; or ‘what a pretty project’ – that’s… ; architecture should be about something more’" says Spanish architect Santiago Cirugeda, who operates at the edge of the law, occupying municipal land to self-build public spaces.

Presented in conjunction with the team behind Al Jazeera’s Rebel Architecture.
