Culture Now: Owen Jones

Join us for this lunchtime talk with writer and journalist Owen Jones.

Owen Jones is a leading author, commentator and recently appointed columnist for The Independent. His first book, Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class was published by Verso in June 2011. Coming to considerable acclaim, Chavs was heavily discussed in the British press and many international publications alike. The book was long-listed for the Guardian First Book Award and was selected by The New York Times as one of the top 10 non-fictional books of 2011.

Jones has written articles for many other publications, such as the Guardian and the New Statesman, and has appeared on multiple television and radio broadcasts. Named as one of the Daily Telegraphs ‘Top 100 Most Influential People on the Left’, and winning the Left Foot Forward’s poll for ‘Most Influential Left-Wing Thinker of the Year’, he has established a strong and supportive public and media following. Growing up in Stockport, Jones attended Oxford University, where he gained a Degree and Masters in History and US History respectively. Jones lives and works in London.

Helen Lewis is deputy editor at the New Statesman, a British left-leaning political magazine. Lewis trained as a sub-editor, before moving to commissioning features at the Daily Mail, and from there to the New Statesman. As well as commissioning and editing, she writes for the NS magazine and blogs for its website. She has also written for Edge magazine, the Stylist, Square Meal and the Guardian. She reviews the papers on Sky News and has appeared on the Today programme, Woman’s Hour and The Daily Politics.
