Mark Stephens CBE is joined by Bianca Jagger for this lunch time talk to discuss his work as a solicitor specialising in media law, intellectual property rights and human rights. Mark has undertaken some of the highest profile cases in the United Kingdom and abroad, including representing most recently Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, as well as representing the leaders of the miners strikes of 1984-85. He has been described by the Law Society Gazette as, ‘the patron solicitor of previously lost causes’.
Mark chairs a number of bodies including the Contemporary Art Society, the University of East London, the Management Committee of the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy Wolfson College Oxford University, and the International Advisory Board of the Media Law International Defence Initiative. He is Vice President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. Mark is a Trustee of Index of Censorship, the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation and Human Rights Council of the International Bar Association.
Mark regularly appears in print and on radio and television. He is also a Freeman of the City of London and was recently awarded a CBE.
Bianca Jagger is the Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation (BJHRF), Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador, member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA and Trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust. She is a prominent international human rights, social justice and climate change advocate.
For over three decades she has been a voice for the most vulnerable members of society, campaigning for human rights, civil liberties, peace, social justice and environmental protection throughout the world.
