Artist John Miller is in conversation with designer Kim Colin, discussing Mike Kelley’s artwork Educational Complex (1995), an architectural model of every school Kelley attended. This marks the launch of John Miller’s book Mike Kelley: Educational Complex (2015, Afterall), which offers an illustrated examination of this milestone work that marked a significant change in Kelley’s practice. In this, Miller considers the representation of Kelley’s schools (and his childhood home) as architectural models; popular fantasies associated with false memory syndrome; and the liberal democratic premises underpinning education. A trained architect, Kim Colin headed the production of Mike Kelley’s Educational Complex.
John Miller, Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Art History at Barnard College, is an artist and critic whose work has been exhibited internationally. He was Mike Kelley’s friend and colleague from 1978 until Kelley’s death in 2012. John Miller’s exhibition Counterpublics is on show at Campoli Presti, London, 4 September until 5 October, 2015.
