Culture Now: Ergin Çavuşoğlu

Contemporary film and video artist Ergin Çavuşoğlu discusses his multifaceted practice with Sara Raza, Central and West Asia editor of ArtAsiaPacific Magazine. Renowned for his complex film and video installations and sculptural works that explore post-migration, geographies and informal architecture, Çavuşoğlu and Raza will highlight influential themes such as literature, theatre and the work of iconic artists Marcel Duchamp and filmmaker Robert Bresson.

Born in Targoviste, Bulgaria in 1968, Çavuşoğlu studied at The National School of Fine Arts in Sofia in the early 1980s. He consequently received a BA in painting from the University of Marmara, Istanbul, an MA from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a PhD from the University in Portsmouth. He currently lives and works in London, UK.

He represented Turkey at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and was shortlisted for the Beck’s Futures Prize in 2004, and most recently in 2010 for Artes Mundi 4 – the UK’s largest contemporary arts prize. Recent solo exhibitions include Alterity, RAMPA Istanbul (2011), Dust Breeding, The Pavilion, Downtown Dubai (2011) Crystal & Flame, PEER, London (2010), Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen (2009-10) and group exhibitions including Paradise Lost, Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain (2010), fast forward 2 The Power of Motion, Media Art Sammlung Goetz, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, Germany (2010), and The First Mediterranean Biennial of Contemporary Art, Haifa, Israel (2010).

This event is in collaboration with Asian Art in London's city wide November contemporary art events.
