Crossings: Stories of Migration is an ICA-led UK-wide film and events programme supported by the BFI using National Lottery funding and in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and the School of Film & Television, Falmouth University
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Avi Mograbi
Filmmaker Avi Mograbi and theatre practitioner Chen Alon meet African asylum seekers confined by the state of Israel at the Holot detention center in the middle of the Negev desert. Together they question the status of the refugees in Israel, using techniques derived from the Theater of the Oppressed – a practice that harnesses theatre as a tool for social and political change.
What leads men and women to leave everything and everyone behind and hurtle towards the unknown? Why does Israel, a land of refugees, refuse to take into consideration the situation of the exiled, displaced and expelled by war, misery and abuse? Can the Israelis working with the asylum seekers put themselves in the refugee's shoes? Can their collective unconscious be conjured up?
Join us for the masterclass with Avi Mograbi earlier in the day.
